What Is The Difference Between Triglycerides and Cholesterol?
Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in our body which is found in our blood. The liver produced triglycerides as well as from the foods we eat.
Most of the time we consume more calories than our body needs. The calories needed by our body are burnt as energy. When the calories input is higher than the output, the body converts these extra calories into triglycerides and stores them in fat cells.
Cholesterol is used to build cells and hormones.
Triglycerides level in our blood is always increase after meal and takes a few hours fot the triglycerides level to return to a normal level.
Then when our body needs energy between meals, the hormones release the triglycerides to be converted into energy.
Both triglycerides and cholesterol can’t dissolve in blood, the lipoproteins transporting the them throughout the body.
High triglycerides level isn’t good for our health as it’s lowering the good HDL (High Density Lipoproteins) cholesterol. Too much triglycerides in our blood takes longer for HDL cholesterol to process it
Simple change in our lifestyle may help lowering our triglycerides level by reducing calories input to avoid storing unused calories by triglycerides as fat.
Change bad saturated fat from meats with the good unsaturated Omega 3 fats from fish. Avoid simple calories from sugar and.processed foods, especially the ones use white flour. Reduce alcohol as it’s also high in calories.
And of course, exercise. A short walk, climb the stairs in the office and swim can reduce high triglycerides level as well as boost the good HDL cholesterol.
Some people may have problems to process triglycerides which caused high triglycerides level in their blood too. It could be a genetic condition from family history with high triglycerides level, low thyroid levels, obesity, diabetes or kidney problems.
High triglycerides level could also be a side effect of taking birth control pills or steroids medication, pregnant women who are taking estrogen or hormone replacement therapy.
